About Our Program:
The A-Z Learning Lab is an afterschool and summer program providing a safe place with structured activities for kids ages 5-17. It is designed specifically for residents of the Bingham Terrace Community. Our program is designed to help the students grow academically and to provide them with tools that will help them develop into responsible adults. Most importantly, our program is designed to give the children of our community a safe place to learn. The A-Z Lab was created because:
- Bright futures lay ahead for our children!
- They face situations and challenges that affect their attitudes and character, but we believe they can not only learn and grow through them, but can also excel academically and become overcomers.
- A child’s full potential or future cannot be known by a simple test or grading structure and leaves open, endless possibilities through vision, creativity, grit, and hard work.
- Children should have plenty of opportunities to learn and grow academically and in life.
- Learning is meant to be fun and inspiring!
- Everyone has potential and potential put into action creates success.
Student Activities:
Every day there is homework time where the children, ages 5-17, can come in, do their homework, and receive help with any questions they might have. Also, there are music lessons, tutoring sessions, endless crafts, and activities available for children ages 5-17.
For music lessons we teach private lessons, as well as group lessons. For private lessons there are guitar, piano, violin, flute, voice, and drum lessons available. The group lessons are focused on Music Theory and Musicianship. Due to staffing, the individual lessons are only available for the teens at the moment.
Tutoring sessions are for ages 5-17. We tutor based on request and offer tutoring for any subject K-12.
For the younger group ages 5-11 there is a focus for the day. For example, if the focus was reading, the lesson might be a review of words, sounds, or letters. The activity might start with pool noodles cut into pieces and then the children would write letters on each piece. Then, the game would be for the children to take those pieces and spell words connecting them with toothpicks or with a string.
For the older group ages 12-17, they also have activities, but the activities are based off of their needs and interests. For example, if they need help in math, we will have a study time set up where they can do practice exercises based off of their grade level and receive help as needed. If their interest was painting, we would provide material with painting techniques and give them an opportunity to explore their interest.
In addition, we have an incentive program. Right now, for any student that attends the lab and is in good standing they can participate in Karate lessons from our local dojo here in Cadiz. Also, there is a rewards program if the student is helping out, assisting another student, or being a really good listener, they receive helping dollars and when they get to five, they get a prize.
